Navy boot camp is 9 weeks of training at Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, Illinois, the Navy’s only enlisted boot camp. Add about a week of in-processing, the P-days, and ship day to Pass-in-Review runs roughly 9½ to 10 weeks: about 65–71 days, or 2.3 months, with graduation on a Thursday.
So how long is Navy boot camp on a real calendar, and why does the internet show three different numbers? The answer to how long is Navy basic training depends on the arrival date: 9 weeks for recruits arriving since January 6, 2025, 10 weeks before that, and 8 weeks before January 2022. Setbacks can stretch the stay, and there’s no boot leave afterward, so ship day to the end of A-School runs from about 3.5 to 20 months depending on the rating.
For comparison, the Navy’s 9 weeks are shorter than the 13 weeks of Marine Corps recruit training, and the military boot camp guide lines up every other branch.
How Long Is Navy Boot Camp, Exactly?
Navy boot camp lasts 9 training weeks plus about one week of in-processing, roughly 65–71 days from ship day to a Thursday graduation.
The 9 weeks are the training clock, not the calendar. The commanding officer’s welcome letter from RTC describes “a week of in-processing and 9 rigorous weeks” of recruit training.
Here’s what the data actually shows. On the official schedule, a recruit who arrives in the week of August 5–11, 2026 graduates on Thursday, October 15, 2026, which is 71 days from the start of the arrival week.
| Arrival week | Training group | Pass-in-Review | Days to Pass-in-Review |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon Jan 6, 2025 | First 9-week class | Thu Mar 13, 2025 | 66 (fiscal 2025, from a Monday arrival) |
| Aug 5–11, 2026 | TG-45 | Thu Oct 15, 2026 | 71 from Aug 5, 65 from Aug 11 |
| Sep 16–22, 2026 | TG-51 | Wed Nov 25, 2026 (Thanksgiving week) | 70 from Sep 16 |
| Sep 23–29, 2026 | TG-52 | Thu Dec 3, 2026 | 71 from Sep 23 |
Source: the RTC graduation schedule, live and archived versions, read October 15, 2026.
How this was calculated: 57 graduation dates from 2025 and 2026 were collected from the official schedule, each listed with its training group number. Counting the group number as the arrival week from October 1, the gap to graduation stays constant, 71 days in fiscal year 2026. TG = arrival week is our reading of the official schedule, not an RTC statement.
Of those 57 graduations, 55 fell on a Thursday, and the other 2 were Wednesdays in holiday weeks. RTC doesn’t publish the exact ship day, which is why the answer to how long is boot camp for the Navy is a range rather than one number.
Where Is Navy Boot Camp?
RTC Great Lakes in Illinois is where Navy boot camp happens, and it’s the Navy’s only enlisted boot camp.
More than 42,000 Sailors completed initial training there in fiscal year 2025, 10,000 more than the year before, according to an RTC release published by Seapower on December 5, 2025. The RTC FAQ puts the pace at more than 1,000 graduating Sailors each week.
Officers don’t go through RTC; officer candidates go to OCS in Newport, Rhode Island.
Why Some Sources Still Say 8 or 10 Weeks
Navy boot camp length has changed twice in four years, and plenty of older guides never caught up.
Here’s the part most people miss. It’s the date a recruit arrives at RTC, not the graduation date, that decides which version applies.
| Arrival date | Length | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Before Jan 3, 2022 | 8 weeks | Older program |
| Jan 3, 2022 or later | 10 weeks | Sailor for Life phase added: mentorship, small-unit leadership, MyNavy Coaching |
| Jan 6, 2025 or later | 9 weeks | Overlap trimmed; focus on Warrior Toughness, firefighting, seamanship, watchstanding |

“We did not cut anything out.”
That’s how Navy spokesperson Lieutenant Commander Mack Jamieson put it to Stars and Stripes on December 13, 2024. Redundant pieces, such as repeated Warrior Toughness lessons, were streamlined instead. The RTC welcome letter gives the reason: the goal to properly man the fleet by 2027.
The schedule shows the switch clearly. The last 10-week graduations were on February 27, 2025, there was no graduation on March 6, and from March 13 classes finished a week earlier.
Navy Boot Camp Week by Week: The 2026 Schedule
The navy boot camp schedule below follows RTC’s own week-by-week recruit page, read on October 15, 2026. P-days come first and sit outside the 9 numbered weeks.

| Week | Key events | Milestone |
|---|---|---|
| P-days | Arrival call, medical and dental, haircut, uniforms, Initial Fitness Event | In-processing, outside the 9 weeks |
| 1 | Third Class Swim Qualification: 50 yards, 5-minute prone float, clothing inflation | Swim qualification |
| 2 | First knowledge test | Phone call (Saturday) |
| 3 | Marlinspike seamanship, man overboard, watching a Pass-in-Review | None |
| 4 | Damage control, confidence chamber lab, firefighting team trainer, RDC fitness assessment | Phone call (Saturday) |
| 5 | Small arms trainer, Navy Handgun Qualification Course with live fire | Weapons qualification |
| 6 | Personnel inspection, second knowledge test, firefighting application | None |
| 7 | Firefighting assessment, final personnel inspection, Warrior Toughness capstone | Official PFA in the CO letter |
| 8 | Official PFA, Battle Stations 21 (12 hours, USS Trayer) | Official PFA (Recruits page), BST-21 |
| 9 | Small-unit leadership, mentorship, MyNavy Coaching, liberty brief | Pass-in-Review |
A few details here correct older guides. The confidence chamber is still on the schedule in week 4, the live-fire qualification is the Navy Handgun Qualification Course, not the M16 and shotgun older guides describe, and the fitness assessment uses a plank, not sit-ups.
Sources disagree by a week on the Official PFA, so plan on week 7–8. To graduate, recruits must pass the Physical Readiness Test, and navy.com lists 46 push-ups and a 12:15 1.5-mile run for men 17–19 as its standard.
What Is Battle Stations 21, and When Does It Happen?
Battle Stations 21 is a 12-hour overnight test aboard USS Trayer, and it normally happens in week 8. RTC’s FAQ calls it a “12-hour overnight crucible event” in the final week, and some divisions run it as late as the Wednesday before graduation.
Battle Stations is the Navy boot camp capstone: recruits are tested in shipboard scenarios that, in navy.com’s words, “require the sum of their knowledge and ability.” Recruits who pass trade the “Recruit” ball cap for a “Navy” cap.
Failing it means remediation or a setback to a later division, per the FAQ. A recruit who passes the swim qualification late, but before the original graduation date, still runs Battle Stations.
Why Can 9 Weeks Turn Into 10 or More?
Setbacks are the main reason. A recruit who misses a requirement can move to a later division, and the RTC FAQ puts an official price in time on most of them.
But there’s a catch. The date in the first text or email home is “initial graduation information,” and it can move.
| Event | What RTC says happens | Added time |
|---|---|---|
| Failed baseline fitness test in P-days | Retake within 72 to 96 hours, then a new division | About 1 week |
| Failed fitness test later | Fitness Improvement Team or set back “three or four weeks” | 3 to 4 weeks |
| Failed swim qualification | Pass after the division graduates: straight to A-School, no ceremony | Varies |
| Failed Battle Stations 21 | Remediation or setback | Varies |
| Future Sailor Preparatory Course | “Normally three weeks long,” before the 9-week syllabus | About 3 weeks |
| Separation (Ship 17) | “Approximately 10 to 20 working days” to process out | 10 to 20 working days |
One fitness setback of three or four weeks pushes the total to roughly 86 to 99 days, as an illustration rather than a guarantee.
Recruits in the Recruit Convalescent Unit or the Fitness Improvement Team get no phone call until they meet the requirements. Anyone separated with under 180 days of service receives an Entry Level Separation.
What Happens at Navy Boot Camp Graduation?
Pass-in-Review has been held every Thursday since October 5, 2023, except a few holiday weeks, when it moves to Wednesday, as on June 18, 2025, and November 25, 2026 (Thanksgiving week). The ceremony runs from 9:00 to 10:30 in the morning, and the doors close at 8:45. Families who can’t travel can watch the livestream on RTC’s YouTube or Facebook page.

- Each recruit can bring 3 or 4 guests.
- Adult guests have needed a REAL ID since May 7, 2025.
- Recruits get their phones back the day before graduation.
- Liberty follows the ceremony, with recruits due back at RTC by 9 PM the day after.
Graduates leave as junior enlisted Sailors, and the Navy ranks guide shows where those first pay grades sit. During boot camp, the Navy’s 2026 Active Duty Pay table lists $2,225.70 a month for an E-1 with under four months of service.
What Happens After Navy Boot Camp, and How Long Until the Fleet?
There’s no boot leave. Out-of-state A-School students “fly out the day following graduation,” and those headed to an A-School at Great Lakes check in right after the ceremony, per the RTC FAQ. Graduates waiting on orders or a class go to the Temporary Holding Unit, with no published time limit.
So what does that actually mean for you? The clock runs straight into Navy A-School, and its length decides when a new Sailor reaches the fleet. Here is Navy A-School length by rating, with the total from ship day.
| Rating | A-School | Location | Ship day to end of A-School |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boatswain’s Mate (BM) | 5 weeks | Great Lakes, IL | About 3.5 months |
| Culinary Specialist (CS) | 5 weeks | Fort Lee, VA | About 3.5 months |
| Master-at-Arms (MA) | About 9 weeks | San Antonio, TX | About 4.4 months |
| Logistics Specialist (LS) | 9 weeks | Meridian, MS | About 4.4 months |
| Aviation Structural Mechanic (AM) | 9 weeks | Pensacola, FL | About 4.4 months |
| Hospital Corpsman (HM) | 19 weeks | San Antonio, TX | About 6.7 months |
| Information Systems Technician (IT) | 24 weeks | Pensacola, FL | About 7.8 months |
| Machinist’s Mate, Nuclear (MMN) | 6 months, plus 6 months of Nuclear Power School and 6 of prototype | Charleston, SC, and Ballston Spa, NY | About 20 months |
How this was calculated: the boot camp range above, plus one travel day, plus the A-School length listed on each navy.com rating page as of October 15, 2026. It leaves out travel between schools, C-School and any holding time, so real totals can run longer.
Not every graduate goes to A-School: navy.com says new Sailors go to their first duty station or to A School, “depending on what job you selected.”
Planning Around the 9 Weeks: Where This Leaves You
So how long is Navy boot camp, really? It’s 9 weeks of training and about 10 weeks on the calendar, with graduation on a Thursday.
For families, the date is the hard part. A few habits from the RTC FAQ help:
- Treat the date in the first text or email as initial, not final.
- Book refundable or flexible tickets, and skip prepaid hotels until the recruit calls.
- Plan around a Thursday, or a Wednesday in a holiday week.
- If the division changes, check the graduation date again.
Passing the swim test, the fitness tests and Battle Stations on the first try is what keeps 9 weeks at 9.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many weeks is Navy boot camp in 2026?
Navy boot camp is 9 weeks of training in 2026, preceded by about a week of in-processing called P-days. The 9-week program applies to recruits who arrived on or after January 6, 2025. Before that it ran 10 weeks, and before January 3, 2022 it was 8 weeks. So older articles quoting 10 or 8 weeks describe programs that no longer apply.
How many days is Navy boot camp from ship day to graduation?
It takes a little over two months on the calendar. The first 9-week class arrived on Monday, January 6, 2025, and graduated on Thursday, March 13, 2025, which is 66 days on the fiscal 2025 calendar. On the 2026 schedule, graduation lands 70 to 71 days after the start of each arrival week, or as few as 65 for a recruit who arrives on the last day of that week. RTC doesn’t publish exact ship days, so the table near the top of this article shows the realistic range.
Can recruits call home during Navy boot camp?
Yes, but on a schedule. Recruits make a short call on arrival night, and a few days later families get a text or email with the division and initial graduation information. The CO letter lists further calls on the week 2 Saturday, the week 4 Saturday, after the Official PFA, after Battle Stations and the night before graduation. Letters take about 5 to 10 business days to arrive.
Do recruits get paid during Navy boot camp?
Yes, recruits are paid while at RTC. The 2026 rate for an E-1 with under four months of service appears in the graduation section above, and that’s the rate that applies during boot camp. No recruit reaches four months of service before Pass-in-Review, since the whole thing takes a little over two months. The higher E-1 figure quoted in some guides is the rate after four months.
Which week of Navy boot camp is the hardest?
RTC doesn’t rank its weeks, so there’s no official answer. Week 8 is the busiest on paper, since it holds both the Official PFA and Battle Stations 21. The P-days put a baseline fitness test into the first days, and failing it costs about a week. Week 1 brings the swim qualification, and a late pass means missing the ceremony with the division.
Does Navy boot camp start in a specific month?
No, new training groups arrive every week. The official schedule restarts its training-group numbers each federal fiscal year, which begins October 1; TG-1 of fiscal 2026 graduated on December 11, 2025. Graduations happen nearly every Thursday as a result. The fiscal 2026 schedule had no graduations on December 25 or January 1, so holiday weeks can differ.
