Marine Corps boot camp, officially called recruit training, lasts 13 weeks. But how long is Marine boot camp on a real calendar? On the official Parris Island graduation schedule, 32 of 35 companies graduate exactly 87 days after they ship, Tuesday to Friday, not the 91 days that 13 times 7 suggests.
That’s about 2.9 months. Both depots, Parris Island in South Carolina and San Diego in California, run the same 13 weeks, and the recruiting district decides which one a recruit goes to.
The real time can run longer if a recruit lands in a conditioning or medical rehab platoon. Graduation isn’t the end of training either: 10 days of leave plus Marine Combat Training add up to about 126 days from ship date before MOS school. If you’re comparing branches, the boot camp guide for every branch lines them up side by side.
How Many Days Is Marine Boot Camp, Really?
Marine boot camp at Parris Island runs 87 days from ship date to graduation. That’s 12 weeks and 3 days, because the 13 weeks already include the Receiving days.
Here’s where it gets interesting. Every company on the 2026 schedule ships on a Tuesday, and nearly all of them graduate on the Friday of the 13th calendar week.
| Company | Ships (Tue) | Crucible starts | Graduates | Days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Golf Co, 2nd RTBn | Oct 13, 2026 | Dec 24, 2026 | Jan 8, 2027 | 87 |
| Lima Co, 3rd RTBn | Oct 27, 2026 | Jan 7, 2027 | Jan 22, 2027 | 87 |
| Delta Co, 1st RTBn | Nov 3, 2026 | Jan 14, 2027 | Jan 29, 2027 | 87 |
| Mike Co, 3rd RTBn | Nov 17, 2026 | Jan 28, 2027 | Feb 12, 2027 | 87 |
| Fox Co, 2nd RTBn (Thanksgiving week) | Sep 1, 2026 | Nov 12, 2026 | Nov 25, 2026 (Wed) | 85 |
Source: the Parris Island graduation schedule, page updated April 13, 2026, read on October 14, 2026.
How the count works: the page lists 35 companies shipping between January 27 and December 8, 2026. For each one, the ship date was subtracted from the graduation date in calendar days, and 32 companies came out at exactly 87.
Holiday weeks pull graduation 1 to 2 days earlier: the Juneteenth week company finishes in 86 days and the Thanksgiving week company in 85. One listing comes out at 89 days and looks like a typo, so confirm that one with the depot.
So how many months is Marine boot camp? Just under three, which means a ship date in early November points to a late-January graduation.
What Does the Marine Boot Camp Schedule Look Like Week by Week?
The Marine boot camp schedule runs in four phases. Receiving isn’t numbered on the depot training matrices, so they end at Week 12, and that week is really the 13th on the calendar.
The clock starts at the depot, not at MEPS processing. The first days, called Receiving, look like this:
- In-processing paperwork and medical evaluations
- Haircuts, plus uniform and gear issue
- The Initial Strength Test: pull-ups or push-ups, a plank and a 1.5-mile run
- Meeting the drill instructor team that stays with the platoon for the rest of training
| Phase | Parris Island | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Receiving + Weeks 1–3 | Classes, close-order drill, martial arts, 5K and 8K hikes |
| 2 | Weeks 4–7 | Swim, Team, Grass and Firing weeks |
| 3 | Weeks 8–10 | Basic Warrior Training, testing, final drill, Crucible |
| 4 | Weeks 11–12 | Marine Week, Family Day Thursday, graduation Friday |
Rifle qualification uses Table 1 and Table 2 with the M16A4. San Diego runs the same four phases over the same 13 weeks, but its recruits move to Camp Pendleton for rifle training starting in Week 7. Its phase boundaries don’t line up with Parris Island’s week for week.
Why Do Sources Disagree on 12 Weeks, 13 Weeks and 3 Phases?
Three numbers keep colliding in articles about Marine boot camp length: 13 weeks, a final Week 12 and an old three-phase split of weeks 1 to 4, 5 to 9 and 10 to 13. The first two agree once Receiving is counted. The third is simply out of date.

Here’s the part most people miss. Starting in November 2017, the Corps added a two-week fourth phase that replaced the four-day Marine Week, and the Crucible moved earlier to make room.
Other common claims have aged too:
- Three phases became four in November 2017.
- The M16A2 is gone from the range; recruits now qualify with the M16A4.
- Crunches left the PFT in 2023 in favor of a plank, and the IST includes a plank as well.
- The 9-week infantry course became the 14-week Infantry Marine Course.
- “All women train at Parris Island” stopped being true in 2021.
Parris Island or San Diego: Does the Depot Change the Timeline?
Marine boot camp locations come down to two depots, and both run the same 13 weeks. The recruiting district decides where a recruit ships, roughly east or west of the Mississippi River, so the split follows districts rather than the river itself.
But there’s a catch. San Diego recruits leave the depot for the rifle range and the Crucible at Camp Pendleton, so the length matches while the weekly calendar doesn’t.
Women have trained at Marine boot camp San Diego since 2021, when female recruits of Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion graduated there on May 6. The FY2020 National Defense Authorization Act set deadlines to end gender-segregated training: December 20, 2024 for Parris Island and December 20, 2027 for San Diego. In fiscal 2024, 1,484 women shipped to San Diego and 1,471 to Parris Island, though platoons stay single-sex.
Per the depot’s posted schedule, San Diego graduations also fall on Fridays, such as November 6, 13 and 20 and December 4 and 11, 2026, with a Tuesday, November 24 ceremony in Thanksgiving week. San Diego doesn’t post ship dates, so check the live schedule before shipping or booking travel. Guests 18 and older need a REAL ID to attend.
When Is the Marine Boot Camp Crucible, and How Long Is It?
The Marine boot camp Crucible is a 54-hour final field event near the end of training. On the Marine boot camp Parris Island schedule, 30 of 35 companies start it on a Thursday, 72 days after shipping. Graduation usually follows about 15 days after the Crucible begins.
Take Delta Company from the table above: it ships November 3, 2026, starts the Crucible January 14, 2027 and graduates January 29. On the numbered matrix that’s Week 10, which is the 11th calendar week once Receiving is counted.
The event combines dozens of miles of marching with tests of the knowledge, skills and values taught in training. Recruits who finish receive the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, the moment they go from recruits to Marines.
How Long Is Marine Boot Camp If a Recruit Gets Held Back?
How long does Marine boot camp last if a recruit gets hurt or misses a standard? Longer than 87 days, because the recruit finishes with a later company. The depot’s Support Battalion FAQ lays out three paths.
| Situation | Where the recruit goes | What it does to the date |
|---|---|---|
| Misses fitness or body composition minimums | Physical Conditioning Platoon (PCP) | Three consecutive weeks |
| Injury or illness | MRP (men) or FRP (women) | No fixed return date, then usually PCP |
| Ready to train again | A new company | The family gets a call with the new graduation date |
In the Support Battalion’s own words, conditioning recruits train “for three consecutive weeks,” while rehab recruits have “no specific date” to rejoin training.
So what does that actually mean for you? One PCP stint turns 87 days into roughly 108, as an illustration rather than a rule. Families should book travel only after the depot calls with the new date.
No current official figure shows how many recruits get held back, so treat any percentage online with caution.
What Happens After Marine Boot Camp?
After graduation, new Marines get 10 days of boot leave and then report to the School of Infantry. Non-infantry Marines take Marine Combat Training, a 29-day course per SOI West’s check-in page, and then move on to MOS school. Infantry Marines take the 14-week Infantry Marine Course, which replaced the old 9-week course between 2021 and 2023.

Here’s the full count for a recruit who ships to Parris Island on November 3, 2026:
| Step | Ends | Days from ship |
|---|---|---|
| Boot camp graduation | Jan 29, 2027 | 87 |
| Boot leave (10 days) | About Feb 8, 2027 | 97 |
| Marine Combat Training (29 days) | About Mar 9, 2027 | About 126 (4.1 months) |
| Or Infantry Marine Course (14 weeks) | About May 17, 2027 | About 195 (6.4 months) |
The math is graduation plus 10 days of leave plus the course length. Travel and check-in gaps aren’t modeled, and MOS school varies by job, so it isn’t included.
Here’s what the data actually shows. For an infantry Marine, boot camp is 87 of about 195 days of entry-level training, less than half.
Most new Marines graduate as Privates, and some are meritoriously promoted to Private First Class. The Marine Corps ranks guide explains what comes after that.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many weeks is Marine boot camp, and does Receiving count?
Marine boot camp is 13 weeks, and Receiving is part of them. The depot matrices start numbering at Week 1 after Receiving, which is why the last week shows up as Week 12. On the Parris Island calendar, those 13 weeks come to 87 days from ship date to graduation. A recruit who ships on a Tuesday graduates on the Friday of the 13th week.
How long do Marines get off after boot camp?
The standard is 10 days of boot leave. SOI West’s check-in rules add 5 days for one referral, meaning an acceptable applicant the new Marine helped recruit, and 5 more for two or more. That caps boot leave at 20 days. After leave, Marines report to Marine Combat Training or the Infantry Marine Course.
Do Marine recruits get paid during boot camp?
Yes. Most recruits are paid as E-1s, the entry enlisted pay grade, from day one of training. Recruits who enlist at a higher grade are paid at that grade instead. Pay tables change every year, so check the current DFAS table instead of older figures online.
How long does it take to become a Marine?
Recruits earn the title Marine when they finish the Crucible. At Parris Island it starts 72 days after shipping in most companies, so the title comes roughly 10 to 11 weeks in. Graduation follows about 15 days after the Crucible starts, on day 87. The full training pipeline before MOS school runs about 126 days, or about 195 days for infantry.
Where This Leaves You
So how long is Marine boot camp? Thirteen weeks on paper and 87 days on the Parris Island calendar.
- Take the ship date and add 87 days to get the Friday graduation; Family Day is the Thursday before.
- Confirm the date on the depot’s posted schedule, and check San Diego’s live page directly.
- Skip nonrefundable tickets until the date is confirmed, and if the recruit moves to PCP or rehab, wait for the depot’s call.
- Expect about 39 more days through leave and Marine Combat Training before MOS school, or about 15 more weeks through the Infantry Marine Course.
And it gets more complicated. Holiday weeks can move graduation up by a day or two, so the depot’s posted date beats any home math.
Dates can shift, and the depot posts the real ones. Check them twice, then plan the trip.
