How Long Is Air Force Basic Training? What the 2026 Schedule Actually Shows

How long is Air Force basic training? It’s 7.5 weeks, and that already includes Zero Week: on BMT’s own graduation schedule, trainees who arrive on a Tuesday march in the graduation parade on a Thursday 51 days later and ship to tech school on day 52. The “8.5 weeks” you still see online is the course length from 2018 to 2020, not Zero Week added on top.

So how long is basic training for the Air Force in practice? It depends on what you count: arrival, the parade or ship day. Below, the days are counted on eight official arrival groups, then come the weeks, the delays and the time tech school adds.

How Long Is Air Force Boot Camp, Really?

The official length is 7.5 weeks, and Zero Week is already inside that number. On the schedule, every group arrives on a Tuesday, holds the Coin Ceremony on Wednesday (day 50), marches in the parade on Thursday (day 51) and ships to tech school on Friday (day 52). That’s 51 days (7.29 weeks) to the parade and 52 days (7.43 weeks) to ship day.

Here are four of the eight groups listed on BMT’s graduation schedule, current as of September 15, 2026:

Arrival (Tue)Coin Ceremony (Wed, day 50)Graduation parade (Thu, day 51)Ship to tech school (Fri, day 52)

Sep 1, 2026Oct 21, 2026Oct 22, 2026Oct 23, 2026
Sep 15, 2026Nov 4, 2026Nov 5, 2026Nov 6, 2026

How this was counted: all eight arrival groups (flights 653 to 776) on the Upcoming Grad Dates infographic were read on October 15, 2026, and calendar days were counted from arrival to the parade and to ship day. All eight came out identical. Anyone can check it: July 28 plus 51 days is September 17.

The rule of thumb: Tuesday arrival plus 51 days equals the graduation parade, and plus 52 days equals ship day.

The BMT FAQ phrases it differently, calling graduation “the 7th Thursday after their arrival.” That means the Thursday of training week 7, which is the 8th Thursday after the arrival date, because the Zero Week Thursday isn’t counted.

Lackland Air Force Base basic training takes place at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas, where BMT has up to 7,000 trainees on any given day. Space Force flights appear on the same grad-date schedule, and Space Force trainees have their own guide.

Why Does the Internet Say 7, 8 or 8.5 Weeks?

Because different sources count different things, and one of them is simply out of date. Here’s how the Air Force basic training length breaks down by number:

NumberWhere it comes fromWhat it actually counts
7.5 weeksBMT FAQ, airforce.comOfficial course length, Zero Week included
7.29 or 7.43 weeksOfficial grad scheduleDays to the parade or to ship day
7 or 8 weeksSecondary sitesRounded figures with no official source
8.5 weeksThe 2018 to 2020 course; a 2019 airforce.com PDFThe previous program (Weeks 0 to 8, with BEAST), not Zero Week plus 7.5

Here’s the part most people miss. The 8.5 figure was a real course length: BMT expanded from 7.5 to 8.5 weeks in 2018, when the separate Airmen’s Week course was folded into it. The 37th Training Wing cut it back to 7.5 weeks in April 2020.

Two of 93 enlisted career pages on airforce.com still say 8.5 weeks, and the crew chief page still lists “Airmen’s Week 1 week,” even though Airmen’s Week no longer exists as a separate stage. For how boot camp length compares across branches, the main boot camp guide has the side-by-side view.

How Many Weeks Is Air Force Basic Training, Week by Week?

Eight numbered weeks, from Week 0 to Week 7, and there’s no Week 8 anymore. Week 0 counts toward the 7.5 weeks.

So what is Air Force basic training like? Early weeks are heavy on in-processing and medical appointments, then most of the time shifts to the squadron area under Military Training Instructors (MTIs).

The BMT Fitness Test in week 5 includes timed pushups, sit-ups and a 2-mile run, plus a Waist-to-Height Ratio check, per the BMT FAQ. The 1.5-mile run people mention is the Airman’s Run at graduation, not the test.

PACER FORGE replaced the older BEAST field exercise in week 6. Since March 2025 it runs 57 hours instead of 36, over three days and two nights, though the FAQ still lists the 36-hour figure. Either way, it doesn’t change the total length of BMT.

When Is Air Force Basic Training Graduation?

Under the official Air Force basic training schedule, graduation is a 2-day event. Wednesday brings the Airman’s Run and the Coin Ceremony, and Thursday is the parade. On Friday trainees ship out, and some get up as early as 2:00 a.m.

So what does that actually mean for you? For families planning a trip, the date math takes three steps:

  1. Start with the Tuesday arrival date.
  2. Add 50 days for the Wednesday ceremonies and 51 days for the Thursday parade.
  3. Add 52 days for Friday, then book refundable travel, which BMT itself advises because a recycle moves the date.

By the formula, an arrival on Tuesday, January 5, 2027 points to a parade on Thursday, February 25 and ship day on Friday, February 26. An arrival on Tuesday, March 2, 2027 points to April 22 and April 23. These are projections, not published dates.

Holiday weeks are the exception. An October 20, 2026 arrival would land on December 10 by the formula, but that stretch crosses Thanksgiving week. BMT’s holiday schedules are not yet posted, so treat any holiday-season date as unconfirmed.

How Long Is Air Force Basic Training If Something Goes Wrong?

Most trainees finish on the standard track. Delays happen when someone is recycled into a later flight, placed on medical hold or processed out.

How hard is Air Force basic training? Hard at a few specific checkpoints: the BMT Fitness Test, the End of Course Exam and injuries or medical issues. A trainee who misses fitness standards gets additional opportunities, sometimes after a recycle, and can be discharged if they still can’t meet them.

But there’s a catch. The BMT FAQ notes that discharge appeals “sometimes result in significant delays,” and no official source gives a day count for a recycle or a medical hold.

Do Trainees Get Paid, Call Home or Get Mail During BMT?

Yes to all three, with limits, per the BMT FAQ and the 2026 pay tables:

  • Pay: an E-1 with under four months of service earns $2,225.70 a month in 2026. Trainees get a $500 prepaid card on arrival, which comes out of the first paycheck, and that paycheck usually takes 30 to 45 days. Direct deposit is required.
  • Phone: no daily access, just “a handful of opportunities” to call, voice only. Extra calls come only for superior performance and only if an MTI recommends them.
  • Mail: trainees get their mailing address in the first day or two, starting with AB and their name, then squadron and flight at JBSA-Lackland. MTIs pick up mail Monday through Friday and are never allowed to hold it. Care packages aren’t recommended, electronics shouldn’t be sent, and mail forwards to tech school automatically.
  • Updates: no one at BMT can release information about a trainee without the trainee’s written permission.

Air Force Boot Camp Length vs. Total Training Time

What happens after Air Force basic training? There’s no trip home: trainees ship to tech school on Friday morning, and the Air Force calls it tech school, not AIT. The Air Force enlisted ranks guide covers where new Airmen start and how promotion works.

Here’s what the data actually shows. Across 83 enlisted career pages on airforce.com that list a tech school length, the median is 66 days, with the middle half between 36 and 91 days. The range runs from 24 days to 340 to 450 days.

Add 52 days of BMT to the median and you get about 118 days, or roughly four months. The count covered all 258 career URLs in the airforce.com sitemap, scraped on October 15, 2026.

Where This Leaves You

How long is Air Force basic training, in numbers? 7.5 weeks on paper, Zero Week included: 51 days to the parade, 52 to ship day, and about 118 days to the end of a median-length tech school.

For family travel, start from the Tuesday arrival, use the formula above and book refundable tickets. A recycle, a medical hold or a holiday week can move the date.

After that comes tech school, which adds anywhere from a few weeks to more than a year, depending on the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Air Force BMT if you count Zero Week?

Still 7.5 weeks, because Zero Week is already part of the official length. On the current schedule, a Tuesday arrival leads to a Thursday parade in the eighth week after arrival, followed by a Friday departure for tech school. The 8.5-week figure belongs to the 2018 to 2020 course, which was cut back in April 2020. A site that adds Zero Week on top of 7.5 is double-counting.

Do you come home after Air Force basic training?

No, not right away. Trainees ship to tech school the morning after the parade, so there’s no trip home between BMT and technical training. Graduation week is when families see their Airman, and BMT’s schedule of events notes it’s the first time in 7.5 weeks. Mail that arrives after graduation is forwarded to the tech school address automatically.

How many people fail Air Force basic training?

The last official figure is from 2019. That June, the BMT commander, Col. Jason Corrothers, said attrition was down from 6.5% to 5.5%, back when the course ran 8.5 weeks. No newer official rate has been published. Treat any precise graduation percentage on other sites with caution unless it names an Air Force source.

Do Guard, Reserve and officer candidates go to the same BMT?

Guard and Reserve enlistees also start at BMT. Future officers usually take a different route, such as Officer Training School or the Air Force Academy. Those programs run on their own schedules, so the BMT dates above don’t apply to them. For active-duty enlisted recruits, the BMT graduation schedule is the one to watch.
