Coast Guard Boot Camp: What 8 Weeks at Cape May Actually Look Like

Coast Guard boot camp is eight weeks of enlisted recruit training at Training Center (TRACEN) Cape May, New Jersey, the service’s only enlisted boot camp since 1982. A second training center opened in Birmingham, Alabama, in June 2026, but its first recruits are only expected to begin training in late 2026.

In a sample of 38 archived Cape May graduation programs (2,783 graduates, 2021 to March 2025), 46.6% of new members reported straight to a cutter, 21.4% to a boat station, and only 11.5% to an A-school. That’s a sample of archived programs, not every company, but the pattern is hard to miss. And according to the GAO, 15% of recruits were discharged from Cape May in fiscal 2024.

This guide walks through the weeks, the current fitness standards, who doesn’t make it, graduation day, and what comes next. It covers enlisted Coast Guard basic training only, with the official sources named along the way.

How Long Is Coast Guard Boot Camp?

The Coast Guard’s boot camp length is eight weeks. The official basic training page describes “an eight-week course of instruction with new classes starting most weeks.”

It hasn’t always been that tidy. A 2023 Coast Guard history of Cape May notes that recruit training has run anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks over the decades, and a 10-week beta company was piloted. Today’s standard course is eight weeks.

Your personal calendar can still stretch. Recruits who fall behind can be reverted, meaning they repeat part of training with a later company, and that’s commonly reported to push graduation back. The Coast Guard doesn’t publish a standard delay, so treat any specific number online as a guess.

Prior-service and direct-entry members are a separate case. They go through a separate DEPOT course, and its programs are published alongside recruit graduations at Cape May.

Where Is Coast Guard Boot Camp? Training Center Cape May in 2026

Coast Guard Training Center Cape May in New Jersey is where enlisted recruits train. It opened as a recruit training center on May 31, 1948, and it has been the only enlisted training center since Alameda closed in 1982.

It’s a busy place. About 4,000 recruits trained and graduated there in 2023, according to the Coast Guard. Here’s Cape May by the numbers:

  • Since 1982: the only enlisted boot camp
  • About 5,500 recruits a year: current capacity
  • 5,445: enlisted accessions in fiscal 2026, roughly 99% of that capacity
  • Median company size in the sample: 51 graduates in 2021–23, 102 in 2024–25

But there’s a catch. In March 2026, DHS announced a second training center on the former Birmingham-Southern College campus in Alabama. TRACEN Birmingham-Southern opened in June 2026, but its first graduates, in early September, were a 29-member class from the Leadership and Management School, not recruits.

A June 2026 Coast Guard bulletin said the first students were expected to begin training at the new site in late 2026. As of October 15, 2026, no public report shows recruit companies training in Birmingham, so Cape May is still where new enlistees ship.

Cape May itself is growing. A $400 million rebuild contract awarded in May 2026 is meant to lift capacity from about 5,500 to 8,000 recruits a year, with no completion date announced.

What Happens Week by Week in Coast Guard Basic Training?

How many weeks is Coast Guard boot camp? Eight, but official sources pin down only a handful of milestones inside them. The table separates what the Coast Guard states from what’s commonly reported by recruits and recruiting blogs.

Week 8Graduation, usually on a Friday31 of 34 dated programs in the sample

The week 7 checkpoint comes from a Cape May photo caption on DVIDS: “Recruits are tested in their seventh week of training on the close order drill and manual of arms movements.”

Why do blogs disagree on the rest? Some put orders in week 5 and others in week 7, and firearms land in week 4 on one site and week 6 on another. The official wording gives no week number for either, only “about halfway” for preferences and “about a week later” for orders.

So the honest shape of Coast Guard basic training is a fixed eight-week container with a few hard checkpoints.

What Are the Coast Guard Boot Camp Requirements for Fitness and Swimming?

The current standard has three events: push-ups, a timed forearm plank, and a 1.5-mile run. Older versions used sit-ups, which is why several top-ranking pages still quote them.

The numbers below are quoted from the official eligibility requirements, checked on October 15, 2026.

EventMenWomen
“Pushups in one-minute”2915
“Timed forearm plank”1:181:09
“Timed 1.5 mile run”12:2915:05

If a guide shows 38 or 32 sit-ups and a run time of 12:51 or 15:26, it’s quoting the old standard.

The entrance fitness test comes in week 1, so arriving in shape matters from the first days. Failing to meet standards can lead to reversion or discharge, but the Coast Guard doesn’t publish a fixed rule for a failed first test.

Swimming is simpler on paper. The official line is that “Both boot camp and OCS include swim training,” and recruits who are uncomfortable in the water may benefit from strengthening their skills before arrival. Specific swim-test numbers circulating online vary from site to site and aren’t confirmed by an official source.

What Does the Coast Guard Boot Camp Daily Schedule Look Like?

A typical training day runs on a tight, repeating pattern. The Coast Guard doesn’t publish exact reveille or taps times, so any clock time you see online is unofficial.

  1. Wake-up before dawn and a fast start to the day.
  2. Physical training.
  3. Classroom instruction and drill.
  4. Meals, eaten on schedule with the company.
  5. Study time, much of it spent on The Helmsman required knowledge.
  6. Lights out, then the cycle repeats.

Weekly religious services are offered, according to the Coast Guard’s recruiting site. Free time grows only near the end, with limited on-base or in-town liberty in the last weeks.

How Many Recruits Fail Basic Training at Cape May?

The closest thing to an official failure rate comes from the GAO: 657 recruits, or 15%, were discharged from Cape May in fiscal 2024. That’s roughly 1 in 7.

The GAO’s 2025 recruiting report adds that the annual discharge rate has ranged between 13 and 19 percent since 2018. That works out to about 1 in 8 to 1 in 5 recruits in a given year.

GAO, May 2025: recruiting results don’t account for recruits who went to Cape May and were later discharged for medical or physical standards, difficulty adjusting, or misconduct.

Here’s the part most people miss. A discharge isn’t the same as being reverted. Recruits sent back to a later company, or to a remediation program commonly called RAMP, are still in training and can graduate later.

So the GAO’s reasons are medical or physical standards, difficulty adjusting, and misconduct. Fitness and open medical questions are the part you can sort out before you ship.

What Should Families Know About Coast Guard Boot Camp Graduation?

Graduation is usually on a Friday. In the sample of dated programs, 31 of 34 graduations fell on a Friday, Thanksgiving weeks moved to a Tuesday (November 22, 2022, and November 26, 2024), and Christmas week 2024 brought a Monday ceremony on December 23.

Contact during training is limited. Recruits can receive letters but no care packages, and phone access is restricted, so ask the recruiter for the current policy. Use the mailing address your recruit sends home rather than one copied from a forum.

The official graduation page, last archived in April 2026, sets the ground rules. No public calendar of 2026 graduation dates was found as of October 15, 2026, so the date comes from your recruit.

  • The main gate opens to authorized guests at 8:15 a.m.
  • The ceremony starts promptly at 11 a.m. and runs about an hour.
  • Guest numbers are capped per company, invitations go through the recruit, and slots can’t be traded.
  • Can’t travel? The ceremony is livestreamed on the Training Center Cape May Facebook page.
  • Book refundable travel, since a reversion or a holiday week can move the date.

Recruits are free to leave after the ceremony. If no family attends, the Coast Guard arranges their travel for authorized leave and reporting to their first unit.

What Happens After Coast Guard Boot Camp? Where 2,783 Graduates Reported First

Here’s what the data actually shows. In the sample of 38 archived graduation programs, almost half of new members went straight to a cutter, and only about 1 in 9 went straight to an A-school.

How this was counted: the programs are the official ceremony booklets Training Center Cape May posted online, recovered from Wayback Machine snapshots and accessed October 15, 2026. Each graduate’s first unit was classified by its name, so “CGC” counted as a cutter and “Station” as a boat station, while DEPOT programs for prior-service members were left out. It’s a sample of archived programs, not every company, rows may be off by one or two per company, and no names were kept.

The A-school share also moved around: 11.3% in 2021, 18.2% in 2022, 9.8% in 2024 and 7.4% in 2025. The 2023 programs covered only two companies, too few to read.

That fits the default path. The Coast Guard describes a first assignment as an unspecialized seaman or fireman, with recruits putting their names on a list for advanced specialty training.

The shortcut is a guaranteed school. According to the Coast Guard hiring incentives page, recruits whose ASVAB scores qualify for a high-demand specialty may have that school guaranteed “immediately following boot camp,” and a critical rating can carry a bonus of up to $60,000. Incentives change frequently, so confirm the terms before signing.

A-school itself runs from 8 weeks for Storekeeper and Yeoman to 28 weeks for Information Systems Technician, with Boatswain’s Mate at 14 weeks. Add the eight weeks at Cape May and that’s 16 to 36 weeks of formal training before a rated job, not counting leave or waitlist time.

What This Means If You Ship to Cape May

So what does that actually mean for you? Train for the test you’ll actually take: push-ups, the forearm plank, and the 1.5-mile run at the current times, not old sit-up charts.

Settle any open medical questions with your recruiter before you ship, since medical and physical standards are among the GAO’s discharge reasons. And plan for a first unit on a cutter or at a boat station, because that’s where most graduates in the sample went.

If a specific rating matters to you, the time to discuss a guaranteed A-school is before you ship, not at the halfway point.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is Coast Guard boot camp compared with other branches?

There’s no official ranking of boot camp difficulty across the services, so “hardest” claims online are opinion. What can be measured is the load: eight weeks, an entrance fitness test in week 1, swim training, and The Helmsman to memorize. The GAO reported that 15% of recruits were discharged from Cape May in fiscal 2024. That figure counts discharges only, not recruits who were reverted and graduated later.

Do you get paid during Coast Guard basic training?

Yes, recruits are paid while they train. The Coast Guard’s recruiting site says pay arrives by automatic deposit. The amount follows the military basic pay table for the recruit’s pay grade, and that table is updated each year. Having a bank account ready before shipping keeps the first deposits simple.

Can you call home during training at Cape May?

Phone access is restricted, and the Coast Guard doesn’t publish a single phone policy for recruits. Letters are allowed, but care packages are not. Some guides promise calls in specific weeks, yet they contradict each other, so the recruiter is the best source for current rules. Families should expect most contact to come by mail.

Do you get to go home after graduation?

It depends on the orders. The Coast Guard’s recruiting site doesn’t publish a set number of leave days after boot camp. The Cape May graduation page refers to travel arrangements “for authorized leave and reporting to their first units,” so leave is possible but not fixed. Timing depends on whether the orders point to a unit or straight to an A-school.

When are the 2026 graduation dates at Cape May?

The official graduation page lists ceremony rules, not future dates. The date comes from your recruit, and it’s usually a Friday. Holiday weeks are the exception. In the sample, Thanksgiving-week ceremonies moved to a Tuesday.
