You cannot pause or break up the test across multiple days. You must complete all six events consecutively within a strict forty-minute window. This rapid sequence heavily exhausts your muscles before you even reach the final run.
The Six Testing Events
The assessment forces you to complete six specific exercises in a mandatory order. Your physical education teacher or a commissioned military officer must administer and video record your performance.
- Basketball Throw: You kneel on the ground and throw a standard basketball as far as possible. This unique event tests your explosive core strength and shoulder mobility.
- Cadence Pull-Ups: You perform maximum strict pull-ups without swinging your body. Women can choose to perform the flexed-arm hang instead of standard pull-ups.
- Shuttle Run: You sprint back and forth across a thirty-foot distance. This event measures your raw agility and quick directional changes.
- Abdominal Crunches: You execute maximum crunches within a strict two-minute time limit. Your elbows must touch your thighs on every single repetition.
- Standard Push-Ups: You perform maximum push-ups within two minutes. You must break a ninety-degree angle with your elbows to count a repetition.
- One-Mile Run: You run exactly one mile on a flat track as fast as possible. You execute this run while your upper body and core remain completely exhausted.
Applicants aiming for the United States Naval Academy must practice this exact sequence repeatedly. Your body reacts very differently to a one-mile run after you just completed maximum leg and core exercises.
Competitive Averages And Maximum Scores
You should never aim for the minimum passing score. Admissions boards actively compare your physical results against thousands of other highly qualified applicants. You must strive to hit the maximum allowed limits to secure your appointment.
The maritime academies heavily weigh these physical results. The United States Merchant Marine Academy expects you to handle massive physical stress aboard commercial ships.

If you plan to attend the United States Coast Guard Academy, you will take a slightly different test called the Physical Fitness Examination. However, mastering the CFA will easily prepare you for that specific Coast Guard exam.
Training Strategy And Preparation
You must start training for this assessment at least six months before your actual test date. Many candidates fail because they only practice the events individually. You must simulate the exact testing conditions and rest periods during your weekly workouts.
